General Summary:
Our international sales are allowing us to expand as the Forest Products Industries are developing worldwide and the new technology markets are expanding as well. We have multiple openings in our mechanical design department and are seeking Mechanical Engineers of all levels, with an emphasis on mid-level and senior level. We are located in beautiful Tacoma, WA . We are seeking candidates capable of conceptual design and execution of industrial machine design as well as leading teams of designers and drafters. You will be a vital part of our team utilizing AutoCAD computer-aided design (CAD), including AutoCAD Inventor (3D) system and peripheral equipment to generate your design concepts of mechanical equipment to meet company standards and customer specifications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include:
- Lead design teams of engineers and designers in conceptualization of robust and varied, cost effective, systems that function in real world environments.
- Creative thinker incorporating cycle analysis, stress and deflection analysis, design for fatigue strength / life, product design flow and staging, operator interface with equipment and understanding the design operation as well as upset conditions collaborating with the controls department to design new products and technologies within timeline and budget.
- Develop shop testing procedures and lead data collecting during shop testing.
- Collaborate with manufacturing to develop delivery schedules and communicate these schedules with the customer.
- Design / engineer systems of equipment as well as individual pieces of equipment that work together to meet overall production throughput to meet customer requirements.
- Prepare BOM’s and manufacturing drawing packages.
- Provides technical information concerning equipment manufacturing techniques, materials, properties and process advantages.
- Analyzes product or equipment specifications and performance requirements to determine mechanical designs.
- Plans, designs or modifies mechanical or electromechanical machinery.
- Reviews drawings and specification manuals to determine mechanical design.
- Prepares and directs preparation of mechanical layout and detailed drawings and schematics.
- Confers with Engineering Manager and Corporate Project Manager to review design specifications of equipment.
- Research parts specifications with parts department and parts vendors to ensure compatibility with equipment design and budgets.
- Directs and coordinates manufacturing or building of mechanical equipment.
- Prepares testing specifications and conducts tests of equipment under operational conditions to investigate design proposals for improvement of equipment performance, or to obtain data for further development, standardization, and quality control.
- Confers with controls engineering department to ensure proper assembly and performance of mechanical equipment.
- Specializes in one or more engineering disciplines or proprietary products.
- May direct and coordinate drafting, as necessary.
- Provide hands-on instruction to shop personnel regarding specifications of mechanical equipment.
- Interface with end user regarding system performance / production requirements, delivery and installation planning.
- Work autonomously reporting to Engineering Manager, working as team leader and at times as a member of a team.
- May travel to customer site to oversee installation and/or start-up of equipment, may supervise final performance testing at site.
- Edit and oversight preparation of operating manuals for designed equipment and systems.
Qualifications:
- BSME/BSEE degree or comparable training/schooling in mechanical design engineering.
- Proficient with AutoCAD 2008, 3-D Solid Modeling – Inventor 2008 Preferred, Excel, MSWord and Outlook. FEA / CFD a plus.
- Demonstrated knowledge of industrial handling / packaging machinery design.
- Experience with motor and reducer sizing, chain, gear belt, v-belt and direct drive sizing and application, as well as sizing and application of hydraulic and pneumatic actuators, such as cylinders, motors, air bags, grippers, and rotary actuators.
- Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, motion and control components.
- Expertise and applicable knowledge in one or more engineering disciplines or proprietary products.
- Ability to read blueprints, hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams and electrical schematics.
- Ability to collaborate with engineering project team and shop personnel to ensure successful completion of projects.
- Seven years experience in a manufacturing environment desirable.
- Autoclave design experience desirable.
- Attention to detail with emphasis on drawing specifications.
- Good written and verbal business communications skills.
- Ability to be self directed and self motivated with minimal supervision.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities efficiently and meet strict timelines.
- Ability to work in a team environment with diverse team members.

Position typically spends 90% of the time in an office environment and 10% of the time in a manufacturing environment. Spends approximately 90% of the time at a PC terminal and 10% of the time on the phone. Some travel may be required. Equipment used: PC and peripherals, fax machine, scanner, calculator and other standard office equipment for recording, storing and presenting information. When hands-on start up is required, may need to use hand tools and physically interface with large equipment. On occasion, lifting requirements may be up to 25 lbs.
